On Tuesday, last, the World Trade Center was essentially bombed by terrorists. I've resisted saying anything here about this because most people with blogs are doing the same. A few things to remember, I think:

  1. The time for negotiation is past. We have never really "negotiated" with terrorists, but there are a lot of people who are still calling for understanding and communication. The people who perpetrated and/or supported these acts do not deserve the luxury of discussion.

  2. To those handwringers who are afraid that a violent retaliation will begat more violence: there will be more violence if we do NOT retaliate and root out this evil.

  3. Terrorists, at least, this group of terrorists, want nothing from us. They don't want our money, our prosperity or our culture. They do not want to trade with us. They do not want us to treat them more nicely. They want us dead. There is no negotation with this kind of thinking.

I do not want war, but some things are definitely worth fighting for. These lousy bastards killed our people and anything we can do to destroy their ability to do it again should be done, and done as expeditiously as possible.

Where is the economy going? There are so many opinions on this that it's pretty apparent that no one really knows for sure. Just check Fox News. Whole lotta speculation goin' on, and little of it matches. My hope is that it takes off again. One guy on the tube says we had an 18 year boom, now we get an 18-year bust. Gak! I hope not. And I don't think it will happen. Have we ever had an 18-year bust? I don't think so. But, we haven't had an 18-year boom either. Maybe the point is that history isn't that good an indicator. (*blissful smile*) Things will be all right.

The blog is back. Why? Because I can.

Ok, the reason is because I thought it would be nice to have a little personal content on the front page again, besides just a menu of what's elsewhere. Plus it gives me an opportunity to talk about stuff in general. Diaries, which I always equated with these blogs, are therapeutic, I think, and boy do I need some therapy.

Point and match -- Finally ...Gore would probably not have won Florida, according to USA Today/Miami Herald et al. Can we now stop the inflammatory "stole the election" talk? Thank you.

Pity the poor comedy writers. Humor in the post-Clinton era, by a writer for Dave Letterman. OpinionJournal - Extra.

Speaking of Bubba, is Clinton ever going to leave? As far as I know, tonight will be the first-ever "farewell address" by a um, dismounting president. But he's not going to fade away. Like Frank Sinatra, Bill's farewell is not forever, I'm afraid. He'll be back. And back. And back.
Once again, Salon.com's Camille Paglia has some words of wisdom.

Jazz is a great show, er, miniseries. I missed the first installment unfortunately, but I did see tonight's and will keep on watching. Even if you're not a jazz lover, the historical perspectives are really wonderful.

Christmas is over, but you can still hear my great-grandfather (in 1957) talking about a little heard-of Christmas tradition from his boyhood (he was born in 1875.) Click here to listen.
